Using QGIS, I digitized a fragmented historic U.S. Census map of Houston's 1940 enumeration districts. The resulting shapefiles consisted of approximately 350 polygons and provided the basis for visual geographic analysis using restricted micro data obtained from the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. As there were no comparable shapefiles available, this work contributed to original research that could be utilized by the broader research community.
This project was conducted alongside Dr. Mark Fossett and PhD Candidate Nicole Jones at the Texas Research Data Center. The shapefile was first presented by Dr. Mark Fossett at the National Research Data Center Conference in September 2016 and was also presented through a poster at Texas A&M's GIS Day in November 2016.
